Memoria
A series of lengthy, time-consuming works that take months to create. Each is named and created for a person, place, or subject that is deceased or no longer existing, held only in memory. Based loosely on 17th C Trompe L’Oeil Letter Rack paintings and American folk art quilting traditions. Fabric funeral flowers—abandon from gravesite bouquets, scattered and weather-beaten—are sewn into the work, which is constituted almost entirely from found or donated materials. The process is a ritual created through honoring, romanticizing, and allowing criticism of the past.
